Finish Line

Once through the Lower Quarry vet check—provided you aren’t cutting the time too close—you can take a breath and savor the final few miles of the trail - the moonlight glinting off the river, the quiet sound of hoof-falls on the dirt-packed path. If you concentrate, you’ll smell the curry-scent of the fig tree on the way to the Black Hole, hear the rustling of night creatures in the undergrowth, and you can think back over the past nearly-100 miles - of the sights you’ve seen, and the closer bond you’ve developed with your horse (or mule). You promise them “just a few more miles” and are overcome with pride at what they’ve accomplished.
When you draw near to the finish line, you will hear the applause and cheers of the crews and spectators welcoming you to Auburn. Soon you can see the lights of the official finish and climb the final small summit. Your mount will drink from the trough at the Overlook before you make your way to the Stadium to take your final lap around the track in front of the grandstands.
