President’s Message

Tevis 2025 is fast approaching. We must get organized for the ride and get the trail repaired from the ravages of winter. Ride Director Chuck Stalley is organizing all the details for the 2025 Tevis Ride and Sesi Catalano is organizing the volunteers. Nicole Wertz is working with all the agencies with oversight of the trail and the Western States Endurance Run to get the trail open. We are all planning for a great ride in 2025.
The big news, in case you haven’t already heard it, is that the Western States Trail Foundation purchased the Robie Equestrian Park from the Robie Foundation. This is incredibly exciting because now it is Western States Trail Foundation property. WSTF is proud and excited to mark this moment in Tevis history. Ownership of Robie solidifies the start of the historic ride and presents many opportunities for the foundation.
I look forward to seeing all of you and saying hello at Robie Equestrian Park on July 12th.

President, Western States Trail Foundation
Ride Director’s Message

Spring weather is here and the trails are coming into shape both on the Tevis and the 50 milers. It’s good to see so many riders and horses enjoying the trail and so many volunteers clearing and improving those trails. We had a major slide in swinging bridge canyon below Devil’s Thumb, but our hard-working WSTR and WSTF volunteers worked quickly to get it cleared.
The management team is looking forward to getting into Robie Park – as it is WSTF property – for maintenance, repair and prep for our start in 2025. We are still waiting for snow to clear so that we have open access to the park.
Volunteers are always welcome and encouraged to join us. It truly takes an army to get all the tasks done and jobs filled. There is a volunteer form HERE. We can use help leading up to the Tevis Ride as well as on Ride weekend. Please follow the link and let us know if you want to help – our Volunteer Coordinator, Sesi Catalano, will take it from there.
We are looking forward to seeing you out on the trail where the magic happens.
Chuck Stalley
2025 Ride Director, Western States Trail Ride (aka Tevis Cup)
Trail Update
Good news! The slide that had completely closed the trail ¼ east of Swinging Bridge has been cleared! On April 20th an amazing team of WSTF and WSER volunteers used muscle and know how to move boulders, rock and dirt to re-establish the trail bed. The trail is now passable, but more work will be done on May 10 to improve it ahead of the run and the ride.

If you’d like to be part of this kind of trail rehabilitation, your chance is coming!

And a friendly reminder, there are two private property locations for EVENT access only between Foresthill and the River Crossing. Please DO NOT ride through private property on any day that is not an approved and permitted event.
These locations are:
- Foresthill – California Loop: from the Mosquito Ridge Road crossing, headed west on the trail for the first two miles.
- Poverty Bar (River Crossing): the mile extending east from the river crossing on the north side of the river (i.e. the last mile of trail between Driver’s Flat Rd/Francisco’s and the river crossing) (headed west to east, you may ride from Auburn to river crossing but NOT across and beyond it).
We will be posting signs in these areas soon.
The Virtual Tevis is on!
Even if you’ll never ride the Tevis Cup 100 Miles – One Day Ride yourself, you can cover the 100 miles of historic trail in a different way on the Virtual Tevis – 100 Miles – 100 Day Challenge!
SIGN UP and log 100 miles on your own trails under whatever power you prefer (on horse, on foot, get creative!) and receive emails of where you would be on the Western States Trail as you reach key ride milestones.
There’s still time – the Virtual Tevis started on April 2 and will finish on July 13, 2025.
The Virtual Tevis has become a premier fundraiser for the Western States Trail Foundation. Through the support of thousands of virtual participants, we are able to not only put on the iconic endurance event but continue with our efforts of trail preservation and improvements.
Tevis Training Ride Weekend
A supported, more relaxed way to pre-ride the hardest 50 miles of the Tevis Trail over two days – from Robinson Flat to Francisco’s.
Hosted at the Chicken Hawk Staging Area and Campground, riders should look at this opportunity as THE dress rehearsal before taking on the toughest challenge in the sport of endurance riding in the world.
